How do I remove my door handle with plate gasket?

I have a door knob with trim plate which lies against the door. The problem is the 2 screws to remove the doorknobs are covered by the trim plate and the base plate does not seem to get out far enough to adapt a screwdriver to remove screws so I could get the door handles apart. Any tips or advice on how to proceed would be appreciated ...

If I understand the base faces the wheel. Look on the upper part of the button and you should see a little tab that pushes in to release the button. Simply press the tab with a small screwdriver and pull the knob off
